Duality - Riso Print

This is the second assignment of my Masters module 'Experimental Illustration'. We were asked to create an A4 poster on the subject of 'Duality' using only 2 colours and overlapping layers to create a 3rd colour, similar to Riso printing.

My concept of 'Duality' was 'Sweet and Sour' using honey and lemons as the symbols of this theme. I sketched a few concepts in my notebook and submitted them to my tutor for feedback.
The next steps were to illustrate both layers on 2 separate sheets of paper, scan them and then edit them in photoshop to get the separate layers of colour. My tutor wanted to see our rough ideas come to life.
The feedback I got was very positive and constructive. I explored different colours to see how they would compliment each other but the blue and yellow colours were the best combination to show the 3rd overlapping colour most effectively. I was on the right track but my tutor suggested to use more of the overlapping colours to make the 3rd colour. I then added more elements to the layers to add this effect.
These black and white images are the final scans I used from my sketches. I edited them in photoshop to separate the image from the background and pasted both scans into one file where I was able to change the colour.
The above is the final image and I am really happy with how it turned out. I was so thankful to get the feedback to ass more of the dark green colour and to add more leaves and lemons because I think it gave the perfect finish to the image!

I loved working on this assignment and challenging myself to try new techniques and get out of my comfort zone!
